To properly restore or refinish a table top requires both some hard work and some artistic talent but the results can save you money, and give results that are as good as or better than new. The first step is to evaluate the state of the existing finish. If the finish is worn through to bare wood, if it is loose or flaking a complete refinishing job may be required. If the finish is intact and just lost its new look or luster recoating may be possible by placing a new finish over the top of the old one. One must be careful that the 2 finishes are compatible.
Before starting make sure you are aware of all manufactures instructions and recommendations. If the surface requires refinishing proper ventilation (good air movement and air exchange) must be available. In addition a facial chemical respirator mask should be worn. Temperature should be 60 and 85 degrees during the entire procedure. Store the oily rags in a fire proof container and dispose of the other waste following all federal state and local guidelines.
Step 1 chemically strip the old finish off all surfaces, be careful to remove all finish including groves and carvings. Make sure you rinse the entire surface after completion to remove all stripper residues.
Step 2 Re-sand the surfaces starting with 80 grit and step up to 120 and finally 180 grit.
Step 3 remove all dust on the surface and in the air use a tack cloth to make sure no dust is present.
Step 4 select a stain color or mix a custom color to meet your requirements. Apply the stain as instructed. And allow it to dry completely.
Step 5 apply a seal coat of finish, spay it on to give you that professional look.
Step 6 Scuff sand with 320 grit papers and apply a 2nd coat.
Step 7 Scuff sand with 320 grit papers and apply a 3rd coat.
Step 8 apply your final coat. Making sure the air is dust free as possible
Step 9 step back and admire your furniture new look!
