Save A Tree, Repair Furniture - Get Back To Work In This Country?

I am interested in hearing from those of you out there in cyber
world what suggestions and success stories you might have about fixing, repairing or restoring furniture or other items instead of throwing it out and buying somthing new and made off-shore.
What makes sense, what doesn't? Our landfills are busting at the seams filled with furniture, tvs computers etc.
I have a friend that is a talented computer repair guy that can't
find work for over a year. I know guys that can take a broken chair and table and make it better than new. they can't find work either.
If each of us decided once a month to have it fixed versus have it dumped we would have 2 benefits:
- A less cluttered environment and
- More of our neighbors back to work.
So lets all make a commitment to fix something instead of buying something new this month.
What kinds of things have you fixed instead of tossing?
